Ciao @morbrorper - perhaps the stronger *smettere indicates stopping the beer for good rather than just finishing it. I only say this as *smettila! is one of my favourite words.

You can use “finito” here, with the same construct…
But in the meaning of “giving up” “smettere” is much more common.
However in a sentence like “Voglio smettere di fumare.” (I want to quit smoking) you cannot substitute one for the other because
“Voglio finire di fumare” means “I want to finish smoking (my cigarette)”.
