Han låtsades vara sjuk så att han kunde vara borta från skolan.

English Translation

He pretended to be sick so he didn’t have to go to school.

Is there a word “låtsade” (no “s” at the end)? Does “att låtsa” exist?

Why is there an “s” at the end required? Is it similar to “att hoppa” and “att hoppas”?

“Låtsa” exists, but it’s rare. You could say “Han låtsade sjukdom” (he feigned illness), but it would sound stilted.

What you see in this sentence, is called “deponens”, where the passive is used in the active sense. “Hoppas” (to hope) is another such verb, possibly unrelated to “hoppa” (to jump), though.
