Han gick hem.

English Translation

He walked home.

Would “promenerade” (instead of “gick”) also fit here?

Yes, that emphasizes the means of transportation. In speech, you could put the stress on gick to achieve the same effect. With the standard stress pattern (on hem), the meaning is rather “he went home”.

I didn’t have that in mind when posting, but reading your explanation I feel that kind of the same is happening in the english sentence. By saying “walked” instead of simply “went” it’s stressing the means of transportation (ie, walking instead of cycling or by car), don’t you think?

I just want to point out that gick still implies walking, so if he went home by some other means, you would use a different verb, such as for, or åkte.
