would using this phrase be considered a little crass like it would be in English?

Welcome @lucalingua. I personally would probably use “il coraggio” instead of “le palle” but that’s just me. I read a lot of Italian books and often see the ClozeM version, it doesn’t offend or worry me particularly, in fact I might even start using it as it is a lot more colourful😉Happy learning!
