Ha iniziato a piovere forte. Per tale ragione, noi abbiamo suonato dentro.

The translation: It started raining hard. Because of that, we played inside.

Suonare, I thought, was supposed to be playing an instrument. Obviously, that could have been the intended meaning here, but but in lots of cases in Tatoeba and Clozemaster, suonare is used where you might have thought giocare would fit the situation better.

Or am I wrong that suonare is just for playing music/instruments?

You are right, suonare is for making music.
But who can tell without context?
In this case, it might be the explanation for the move of an open air concert.
