“Gli abitanti del villaggio” would be more precise since the sentence is out of context. “Abitanti” by itself means inhabitants or residents.
WordReference has two alternatives for “villager”: “gli abitanti di paesi” or simply “i paesani.” Could either of these replace “Gli abitanti del villaggio”? I’ve seen paesano defined as countryman or fellow countryman so I’m not sure.
