In sentences like this one, what’s the difference between “geben”, “tun”, “legen”, “stellen” etc.?
Here, geben is correct because it is short for hinzugeben, put/add to something.
Legen and stellen won’t work because ingredients will neither stand nor lay down. You -can- for the pot, though. Ich stelle den Topf auf den Herd. Ich lege die Pfanne in die Schublade.
Tun is always colloquial. Can be used, but elementary school teachers will frown upon you.
