Gefahr macht stumm.

Does this mean “dumb” as in “silent” and not “stupid”? If so, actually saying “silent” might be better because the first place my mind goes when I hear the word “dumb” is not “silent” but rather “stupid”.

Ugh, whats the english translation they’re using?

Oh, sorry, they are translating this in English as “Danger makes dumb.”

Ugh, yes, either of these translations is a bit off. The meaning of stumm and stupid doesn’t correlate at all so your proposal would be better.

Thanks! I’ll see about updating this on Tatoeba next time it comes up in my lessons.

It looks like someone else has already added “Danger makes mute.” as a translation, perhaps it’s slightly better?

They’ve changed it now to “danger makes you numb”, which I still don’t think captures the original meaning. If I understand it correctly, it means that you’re stunned into silence, so perhaps “danger leaves you speechless” would work better.
