Let’s take a pause. I cannot continue any longer.

It is harder to learn the tenses when the tense in the English translation is not the actual tense in French.

I think that the translation shouldn’t deviate from the original sentence when it’s not necessary. Here you could use the present tense in the second sentence as well:

“Faisons une pause. Je ne peux (pas) continuer plus longtemps”.

I like it better than the given translation.

About “I cannot” :

It can be translated as “je ne peux pas” or “je ne peux”. Which you use depends on context.

“Je ne peux pas” is more casual, and it (or some abbreviated version of it) is almost always used when speaking.

“Je ne peux” is more formal, and you’re more likely to see it in books.
