It was all in vain!
I am confusedd by the explanation which labels “vegeblich” as an adjective whereas to mean “in vain” rather than “vain” its function in the sentence would be that of an adverb?

I think it’s an adjective because the verb is “to be” / “sein”.
It would be an adverb in sentences like “Ich habe es vergeblich versucht” - “I have tried in vain”.
