It sounds strange, but it is true none the less.
Would be the translation “funny” instead of “strange” more correct?

One of the meanings, and the literal translation, of “komisch” is “funny”, “comical”.
But it is very often used to mean “strange”, “odd”, “curious”, “weird”, etc.
So this translation seems appropriate and is what comes to my mind first.

The translation “strange” is correct.
It was a standard sentence and kind of a running gag in a TV show for children, where difficult things were explained in a simple way.
