Isn’t Wildschwein the word for wild boar? why is this translated this way?

You are right and btw, I never heard the expression “betrunken wie ein Wildschwein” before.
Similar and more common expressions:
“voll wie eine (Strand)haubitze”
“blau wie ein Veilchen”
“voll wie tausend Mann”
“sturzbetrunken”
Surely there are more and even more local ones.

I’m more confused by the English than the German here. “Drunk as a mouse” is not something I’ve ever heard, and google isn’t showing much for it either. This one is strange.
