Er war betrunken wie ein Wildschwein.

English Translation

The man was drunk as a mouse.

Isn’t Wildschwein the word for wild boar? why is this translated this way?

You are right and btw, I never heard the expression “betrunken wie ein Wildschwein” before.

Similar and more common expressions:
“voll wie eine (Strand)haubitze”
“blau wie ein Veilchen”
“voll wie tausend Mann”
“sturzbetrunken”
Surely there are more and even more local ones.

Me neither.

I wouldn’t know why wild boars would be drunk, but apparently they often are, according to this article:

A quote from the article:

Neben Igeln gehörten beispielsweise Wildschweine zu den Tierarten, bei denen immer wieder Rauschzustände zu beobachten seien.

You never stop learning…

I’m more confused by the English than the German here. “Drunk as a mouse” is not something I’ve ever heard, and google isn’t showing much for it either. This one is strange.
