Er hat mir eine üble Erkältung angehängt.

English Translation

He gave me a bad cold.

Is this actually a common usage? I have never heard or read it. The more usual verb which I hear 100% of the time used in this sense is “anstecken”.

I have heard “anhängen” used to mean “to give someone the blame for something”, but that obviously doesn’t work here.

You are right.
Not very common, casual, but nevertheless absolutely clear: “He attached it to me.”

I’ve never heard or read that before. At least not for a common cold, only for sexually transmitted diseases.

For a cold I’d say “Er hat mich angesteckt.”
