A cutre expression “nach und nach” but i would have thought “allmählich” is preferable?
You can also say “allmählich” if you prefer. These words/expressions are basically synonyms (although you can argue there are small differences).
I presume if the English sentence had been “He recovered gradually”, the translator would have used “allmählich”.
