English Translation

English has become an international language.

What meaning nuance is intended by making the object a prepositional phrase with “zu”?

Englisch ist zu einer internationalen Sprache geworden.
Englisch ist eine internatonale Sprache geworden.

I cannot feel a difference here.

In some cases one might argue that one stresses the result, the other the process:

Im Laufe des Turniers ist er ein Spitzenspieler geworden.
Im Laufe des Turniers ist er zu einem Spitzenspieler geworden/gereift.

During the tournament he became a top player.
During the tournament he grew into a top player.

However, the difference is so small, I cannot nail it down.

Your effort is appreciated and is sufficient as an answer.

I agree with the result vs. process explanation. I wanted to write basically the same, but MRgK was faster
