Gaahhh. This spelling catches me out every time. Why fÅnge and yet fÄngelset? and what about fÄngelsekund. Soooooooo confusing
I think these vocal shifts are vestiges of Germanic umlaut. Also note that there are two different verbs involved: fånga and fängsla.
