En efter en reste sig och gick.

“One after another they stood up and went out” - I’m confused as to where the “they” is coming from here. I see no indication of a definite article? help!

The English is the original, and this is the translation, so the question is rather: where did “they” go? In fact, “En efter en reste de sig och gick”, wouldn’t sound bad, either.

Update: I can’t get around the feeling that the sentence sounds odd without “de”. I will ask around.
