As a Spanish speaker, I’m surprised to see “lhe” (indirect object) instead of “o” (direct object).

I wonder if that isn’t leísmo. For the reverse case, wouldn’t you say “Él la miró directo en los ojos”?

Yes. Anyway I am leísta so I would also say él le(her) haha, like both sound correct to me.
