Are you in earnest in saying so?

Is this translation a good one?

I would understand the English sentence as “You are not joking” but the Italian one as “You are not lying”.

In Italian I would have expected something like “… sul serio …”.

Our madrelingua mentioned only that this should be "È onesto dire così? Senza “a”.
