It changes the meaning of the sentence, but there is no reason why “You can stay with me.” couldn’t be translated as “Du kan stanna med mig.” instead of “Du kan stanna hos mig.”, right?

To me, stanna hos mig sounds more natural, but your suggestion isn’t wrong.

BTW, if the implication is “stay at my place”, we would say bo hos mig.
