I cannot find a better translation of tale than berättelse or historia. In this case I would go for the latter; “en sorglig historia” has the ring of a set phrase.
My opinion is again biased by the Danish equivalent of ‘berättelse’, which is ‘beretning’, and that definitely does not work as a translation of ‘tale’. So let’s agree on ‘historia’ ![]()
Out of curiosity, is the Danish word fortælling?
That might be the closest you will get. Here is a primitive test: What is the title of the Danish translation of ‘A tale of two cities’ by Charles Dickens? ‘En Fortaelling om to Byer’!
