Der junge Knabe half der alten Frau.

Is this a more old-fashioned word, sort of like the corresponding word “Knave” in English? Or perhaps more like the word “lad” which is not quite as archaic but still rather old-fashioned?

“Knabe” is old-fashioned and i wouldn’t use it, but i believe most Germans will understand it. You will find it in old books like “Grimms Märchen”, but I can’t imagine finding it in books published during the last 50 Years,
