We mostly use “såra” in the emotional aspect, as in “hurting someone’s feelings”, or about hurting somebody using violence. Some examples: Jag blev sårad av dina elaka kommentarer. Tom blev allvarligt sårad när fienden överföll. Maria blev sårad i handen av ett knivhugg. Jägaren blev dödligt sårad av björnen. Otherwise we use “skada”: Jag skadade handen när jag slant med kniven. Tom blev allvarligt skadad i en bilolycka.
