Is there a major difference between “wider” and “gegen”? Could you also use “gegen” here too?

They are indeed listed as synonyms on dict.cc, so I suspect you can use them more or less interchangeably, like “contrary to” and “against” in English. But now I await the native speakers on this forum who will come along to tell me there is in fact some subtle nuance of difference between the two

No subtleties here ! No difference that I can see. Maybe “wider” is a bit more old fashioned.
