“…hat… [verb].” This structure refers to an action that happened once or one that continued after made (past perfect vs. past p. continuous)?

You could very well say “Das Ende des Films machte sie traurig.”
But many Germans for some reason prefer the perfect over the simple past. Not for any grammatical reason, simply out of an idiosyncrasy.
