It’s a US/UK thing, rubber being used mostly in the UK afaik.
If it makes you feel any better, we actually have a similar thing going on between France and Québec in this case :
une gomme = used in France
une efface = used in Québec
The word gomme is also used in Québec, but it means chewing-gum.
