Wouldn’t this be more like “thank you for not saying that”? or am I thinking of the ‘dass’ too literal?

“dass” is not a pronoun here (which would be “das”), but rather a subordinating conjunction. The literal translation into English would be “thank you, that you said nothing”, but that sounds odd and stilted in English. Clozemaster’s suggested translation is much better: “Thank you for not saying anything”. We lose the “that” in the English translation but it still matches the intended meaning.
