Credete davvero ai fantasmi?

English Translation

You really believe in ghosts?

Shouldn’t it be
Credete davvero in fantasmi - Do you believe in ghosts?
Credete davvero ai fantasmi - Do you really believe the ghosts (what they have said etc)

Correct me if I’m wrong

Ciao @Lewwardington e benvenuto/a. Here I believe “ai” is correct. It all depends on the preposition used and context. I’m so used to seeing “ai fantasmi” but if I may, I’ll leave it to someone else to better explain the grammar.

Welcome in the forum!
I struggle with this, too.
The entry in Treccani is quite comprehensive:

My extract:
“Credo a quello che dice.” = I believe what he says.
“Credo in Dio” = “I believe in the existence of God” or “I trust God”.

But overall it seems that “a” is never wrong except in religious context.

So I think your translations are right, but in this case “ai” is not outright wrong.
