I heard recently that this might be more often expressed as “ieri notte” — can anyone advise on what may be more typical? Or are they equal?

Interestingly, as per CR - “Can be confusing, ieri notte refers to between 11pm or midnight the previous day and 5pm of the day on which the expression is spoken. La scorsa notte - synonym of Ieri notte”.
