Avevo un pistola? - i wonder if it is avevo because it was on ongoing situation (you were having a pistola) and not a completed action (you had a pistola). I’m just thinking out loud.

It wouldn’t be wrong, but it changes the meaning a bit: It makes the sentence raise doubt about the truth of the reported speech.
This is an example of “indirect speech”, and in this case it is correct to use the indicative.
