I’ve been told that “proche” is a bit old fashioned. Would there be any other ways to say this sentence that sound more natural?

I guess you could also use one of the following:
C’est à côté.
C’est juste à côté.
Adding “juste” implies that whatever it is you are talking about, is even closer.

The more common way to say that nowadays is:
"C’est tout près."
