There is kind of a hierarchy for size:

Città
Paese
Paesino

Not sure where villaggio fits in there.

In fact I at first thought the Italian should be “Centinaia di città e paesi hanno subito danni.” Even though that better matches the English, I also discovered that (per Collins Italian-English Dictionary) that città can be used for town. I would really prefer the closer match though.
