In what situations do we use this sentence?

Given the English translation, “Change the animal!”, I would have expected “Cambia l’animale!”, but this is actually the original.
It doesn’t make a lot of sense. I think you can safely ignore it.

Perhaps it just refers to changing the subject or just changing one thing for another. “Ah that’s a different animal!” we sometimes say, like “Ah, that’s a different story!”
