I’d say it’s pretty common in formal/written language.
Some people may use it in eloquent speech.
According to the Duden it’s not that uncommon:
I also don’t think it’s that uncommon, but you would more often use “mögliche”, though that doesn’t have the exact same meaning.
Looking at the examples at Duden, “etwaige kleine Verzögerungen” is one I feel like I have heard often (or in a similar vein “etwaige Verspätung(en)”).
