I think that’s the main thing. If a friend is talking to you, he/she usually won’t say “As-tu”…
A colleague/superior may though.

As far as "ta boîte (e)mail(s) vs tes mails, I think both are fine and commonly used.
Finally, regarder, vérifier are both commonly used as well. You can even use “checker”.

Thanks! It seems a lot of the translations here use the inversion, which I have to remember is considered more formal than “Est-ce que” or "Tu as … ? "
