Are you frustrated that computers, smartphones, RAM, and everything tech-related is so expensive?

John Collison, co-founder of payment processing company Stripe, recently interviewed Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI (maker of ChatGPT, the “engine” behind Clozemaster’s Explain feature).

After Sam Altman, in October 2025, personally bought 40% of all RAM in the world for OpenAI, and thereby caused RAM to become extremely expensive, Sam Altman now says that he hates that regular people have RAM in their computers. Regular people (you and I) should give their RAM to OpenAI’s datacenters where the RAM would be much more useful (to Sam Altman and OpenAI). By extension, Altman hates that people run local “AI” models when he wants people to use ChatGPT in the cloud.

From, like, a global allocation perspective, actually it’s quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer. […] You want maximum utilization in the cloud […].
