To waste time or to pass time? Better than to keep up with?

English Translation
I read books and magazines to keep up with the times.
Agreed. The Indonesian author on Tatoeba misunderstood the meaning of “to keep up with the times” (= to catch up with the recent news and trends).
“Menghabiskan waktu” literally means “to exhaust/fulfill time”. So, I think “to kill time” sounds good in English if the Indonesian sentence stays as it is.
