We’ve created life in our own image.
It looks like stesso can be used instead of proprio.

I think it is more stressed than “proprio” here.
The English sentence is a Stephen Hawking citation and he referred - a little tongue-in-cheek - to Genesis.
Would be interesting to know, how the sentence in Genesis sounds in Italian.

Genesis I, 27 (Riveduta '27):
Dio creò l’uomo a sua immagine; lo creò a immagine di Dio; li creò maschio e femmina.
"No “stesso” there. The Hawking sentence is much more alluding to the English Genesis.
