Confusing - the translation here would be rather “we have had success” and not “we had success” (different tense) … shouldn’ the translation of “we were successful” not rather be 'avevamo succeso"?

I read this as “We have been successful” or yes, “we have had success”. It would probably be clearer with more context but I think we get the message; -)

I see it as normal use of the passato prossimo, meaning “we had success” (we were successful).

I take that as “we used to be successful”, or “we were being successful”.
