“La leucemia” is the subject here, albeit in the passive.
Put away “a mio zio” and the sentence sounds completely natural to me.

Yes, it works a little like piacere here, at least that’s how I read it, ie “To my uncle…” the subject being la leucemia. I too would have thought twice about it.
