That works. And so does “Blatthaufen”.

But this is a bit similar to the “shards” sentence we had recently. (Auf dem Boden lagen Scherben von zerbrochenem Glas.)

“Laub” is a dedicated word for a collection of leaves, especially ones that have fallen to the ground. You could think of it as “foliage”. So it’s a bit more idiomatic to use it.
